Mackin sets track alight
Mackin sets track alight

Continuing a remarkable come back to road racing, Banbridge CC’s Terry Mackin has added to his seasons achievements by notching up some very impressive Track performances. Initially taking part in the Track open nights at Northern Irelands only cycle track in Orangefield, Belfast, Terry has fast become the revelation of the Ulster track scene in 2010. Setting a new standard for the Orangefield Lap Record, he also came within half a second of the 500 metre national outdoor record at SunDrive park in Dublin on his first timed run over the distance.
Terry hasn’t been alone in his trips to the track. Banbridge mountain bike ace and recent winner of the ‘A4’ race at the Noel Teggart Memorial, Matthew Adair, has also been making the trip with some success. Both Terry and Matthew were recently selected to represent Cycling Ulster at the Duane Delaney Memorial Track event in Dublin. Both riders were obviously well prepared and left a substantial mark on the meeting. The event was held over a 5-race Omnium basis meaning the overall winner of the Duane Delaney Cup would have to be consistently strong across all 5 race disciplines. Being consistently strong is one thing, winning all 5 races is quite another – but with the assistance of some great team riding that’s exactly what Terry Mackin did, adding his name to that of the late Paul Healion; Michael Mulcahy and John Lynch on the Delaney trophy and is the first Ulster rider to win the event! Matthew was not to be left out however, taking second place in the points race and 4th overall in his category.
