Gilchrist Cup - Quarry Road 01/07

Wednesday, 1 July 2009

Quarry Road was the venue for the third and last round of the Gilchrist Cup.  The rain earlier in the day cleared up leaving a sunny and humid night for a turnout of 29 riders.  First off was group one containing James Curry, Zak Hanna (Dromara), Chris Weir (Dromara), Jim Daly, Stephen Prentice and Paul Anderson.  Four minutes and thirty seconds later they were followed by Ed Hodgett, Mark Downey and Leslie Creighton.  Group three starting nine minutes back from the front contained Mark Mulligan, Michael Curran, Daniel Purdy, Scott Daly, William Muligan and - in a new group following his win two weeks ago - Terry Mackin.  Group four containing Matt Adair Charlie, McConville, Kevin McAlinden, Stephen O’Hagen, Gareth Rogers, Stephen Goan and Tony Hare (Apollo) were eleven minutes back, and scratch group containing Simon Curry, Roger Aiken, Liam McKiverigan, Peter Lilley, Derek  Hana (Dromara), Davy McKnight (Dromara), Darren Weir (Dromara) and Stephen Baines (East Antrim) had fifteen minutes to make up to the front of the race.

Ivor Park proved once again he is getting the hang of timekeeping duties, as the field merged together on the last lap, with the scratch group only catching the rest of the field in the final stages.  The race ended in a sprint to the line led by Roger Aiken, taking his first win of the season, followed by Dromara CC’s Darren weir and Davy McKnight.  Simon Curry was fourth.
